Young Woman - New Orleans 1880s
This charming young woman is wearing some very unusual and interesting pieces. The gold chain attached through her buttonhole has a round pendant that appears to be a coin or medallion of some sort, or perhaps a thin watch, on one end and what appears to be a gold-capped pencil on the other end. The flower corsage over her heart is what was called a tussy-mussy. The flowers are held by an elaborately twining brooch. There is a smaller, but similar, piece of jewelry partially obscured by the fluffy collar of her dress. She is also wearing pierced earrings in the shape of small hoops. The fantastic concoction on the pillar beside her that looks much like a feather-topped birthday cake is her narrow-brimmed hat - velvet with ostrich feathers.
