Victorian Mourning Brooch - 1880s
What a wonderful face this woman has. She looks slightly amused, barely able to to keep from smiling at the camera, yet there is weariness and sadness in her face. The slight droop of her right eyelid and lack of expression on that side of her face suggest that she may have had a minor stroke. Dressed in black velvet, satin, and wool, she appears to be in mourning, probably for the kindly-looking gentleman seen in her beautiful gold-framed portrait brooch. Another picture of this same woman, showing her entire dress and her young son, can be seen here.
