Victorian Girl with Flowers - 1880s
It's hard to know what to make of this young woman's short, tousled hairstyle. It would have been unusual in her day. Perhaps she had a fever or some other illness that required it to be cut. Or maybe she was just a tomboy who liked the freedom of short hair. She is swathed in a wide collar of lace, with a tussy-mussy flower corsage on her left shoulder and a pendant necklace. The off-center satin ribbon at her throat adds the perfect touch of innocence.
