Young Woman with Parasol - 1890s
Between the white cotton parasol and the wide-brimmed straw hat trimmed with artificial flowers, this young woman had excellent protection for her beautiful skin, which is good because she may have been headed to a 4th of July picnic. She is wearing an enamel flag pin at the center of her bodice, as well as a locket on a lavaliere-style chain, and small pierced earrings. The dark strip across the front of the locket may indicate that this is a mourning piece. The lace-trimmed dotted swiss of her dress completes the total picture. Hard to imagine how she could look more demure or more charming.
