Victorian Child in New Orleans - 1890s?
This amazing portrait was taken in a studio in New Orleans. Although undated, it is probably from the 1890s. The little girl is clearly sophisticated beyond her years. The pouty expression, fantastic cut velvet or patterned satin cumberbund, fingerless gloves, and confident pose make her unforgettable. The elaborate bookchain fringed necklace and gold bracelet over the gloves indicate a background of wealth. Note the pierced drop earrings. Anne Rice may have been thinking of a girl much like this one when she created her child vampire character in "Interview With The Vampire."
