New York Woman
This self-assured woman posed for James Alba Bostwick in his studio at 98 Sixth Avenue, between 8th and 9th Streets in Manhattan. The exact dates are unknown, but judging by her clothing and hairstyle we would estimate that the picture was taken in the mid 1880s. At her throat is an elaborate gold brooch which could have also had a hook on the reverse which could be used to suspend a watch or locket. Her earrings are especially intriguing. They are hoops arranged through a fan-shape of some lighter colored substance, perhaps cloth or fine mesh.
