Graduated Faux Pearl Necklace
This lovely young woman was photographed in Bellingham, Washington between the years 1915 and 1918. She looks as if she is of Native American ethnicity, probably from one of the Pacific Northwest Coastal tribal groups. Bellingham had a large Native community during this time, many of whom worked in the salmon canning industry. This lovely young woman is wearing an elaborately beaded dark-colored dress and a long strand of graduated glass faux pearls. The photograph was taken by James Grosart, a Scottish immigrant whose studio was at 1211 Dock Street. The photograph can be dated quite precisely because city records show that he was only at this location from 1913 until 1918. Dock Street became Cornwall Street in 1922.
