Mary Elizabeth Duffy was 17 years old in 1928 when she arrived in New York City from Scotland. In this immigration photo she is the epitome of the New Woman with her neatly bobbed flapper-style haircut. Her upward gaze is demure, but there's no mistaking the determined set of her jaw. And of course she came to America fully accessorized, with a wonderful necklace and bold barrette. This is a classic image of a charming young woman ready to make her way in the world, unwilling to take no for an answer.
