This early San Francisco woman is wearing pierced earrings, as was typical in the Victorian era. Later, after the invention of screw back earrings, pierced ears fell out of fashion. Clip back earrings followed screw backs, and it wasn't until the 1960s that women once again embraced pierced styles, not realizing that their great-grandmothers had the idea first.
