Cordelia Gale Brown
This redoubtable woman was 75 years old at the time when this photograph was taken, at Christmas in 1926. The photograph is by Fred Santa Ana Hartsook, a California rancher and award-winning photographer. Cordelia appears to have been a practical, no nonsense kind of woman, yet she couldn't resist slipping an exquisite handmade lace blouse beneath her sensible jacket and wearing this luminous glass bead necklace when posing for her portrait. Her large round glasses were terribly au courant for their time. The beauty of her neck and bosom are accentuated by the necklace and the lace. So maybe she wasn't so completely practical after all....
