Braided Hair Watch Chain
This photo dates to the height of the Victorian era, circa 1870. The young woman at first appears quite dour and plain, but on closer inspection we can see that the extravagantly long watch chain draped across her front is made of woven hair. This could be a piece of mourning jewelry, which would account for the simplicity of her dress and her wistful expression. A simple gold bar pin is at her throat.
