Victorian Bookchain Necklace
This pretty preadolescent girl is wearing an elaborately smocked dress accented with a very grown-up necklace and a floral tussy mussy. Victorian women frequently wore these special corsages known as a tussy mussy, often including in them blooms which spoke the symbolic "language of flowers." Her bookchain necklace has an elaborate central element which is built in layers and probably enameled. An elegant metal fringe tassel dangles beneath the central element, which may be a locket. This necklace is actually a little large on this young woman, so may have been loaned or given to her by an adult relative.
