1945 Mexican Silver
During World War II jewelry makers in the United States were restricted in their use of base metals. They turned to Mexico where cheap silver and a plentiful workforce of skilled craftsmen made it possible to continue producing jewelry despite these shortages. The result was a surge of interest in Mexican style jewelry among American women. This young woman's name was Phyllis and she lived in Des Moines, Iowa. For her high school graduation picture in June of 1945 she chose a Mexican silver cuff bracelet and Mexican silver ball earrings to go with her cardigan sweater and hot red fingernails.
