Peggy Taylor in 1943
Peggy Taylor lived in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. She was 16 years old when this picture was taken. Soon after, she left school and went to work at the local dime store jewelry counter to help support her mother and 4 sisters. Her father had abandoned the family during the Great Depression, and they were struggling. Peggy married a man she met at the jewelry counter. He was a bluegrass musician with a group called The Mountain Ramblers and Peggy traveled with them to shows in various towns. For a while, one of her husband's best musician friends was dating the not-yet-famous Patsy Cline, so Peggy and Patsy shared adventures, as well. In this photo Peggy is wearing a locket brooch borrowed from her older sister just for the occasion of having her picture taken. A similar brooch can be seen here.
