1937 Mexico City Woman in Tehuana Costume
This woman was dressed to party at the 1937 Mexico City Country Club fiesta. She is wearing the costume of a tehuana, a woman from the Isthmus of Tehuantepéc, the place in the south of Mexico where the country is the narrowest. Frida Kahlo frequently painted herself wearing similar clothing, and nationalist pride made this a popular style of dress for women of the Mexican upper classes and intelligentsia during this period. This woman is wearing a many looped and tied bead necklaces over her richly embroidered blouse, and 3 wide carved bakelite bracelets are stacked on each arm.
