Extraordinary 1950s Navajo Handstamped and Painted Bucket Purse
Item #XX194111
Base of the bottom cowhide portion measures 5 x 6-3/4". The stamped and painted cowhide is 4-1/4" tall. The suede top is 5-3/4" deep. This unique and exceedingly rare piece of Native American leatherwork dates to circa 1957. It was purchased on the Navajo reservation by a nurse who was working there at that time. Each of the ceremonial Yei-Bei-Chai dancers stamped into the leather is painted and colored differently. These represent spirits with influence over the natural and human worlds. The dance they are doing is said to be a celebration of planting and harvest. The condition of this piece is absolutely pristine. The suede and leather are both soft and supple, without cracking or drying. There are no scratches or signs of wear on the brown cowhide or black lacing. $575.00 (Includes insured shipping to a U.S.A. address)
