Walter Lampl 14K Onyx Hardstone Cameo Victorian Revival Ring

Walter Lampl 14K Onyx Hardstone Cameo Victorian Revival Ring

Item #AA195293

Cameo measures 5/8 x 7/8" (15 x 20 mm.). Ring size is 5-3/4. This magnificent black and white onyx cameo depicts the national symbol of Mexico - the eagle clasping a rattlesnake in its talons. The carving is exquisitely detailed, with amazing attention to the eagle's feathers, eye, and beak. The ring band is ornately engraved in the Victorian Revival style. Marked Victorian Revival style. Marked WL 14K. This spectacular piece almost certainly dates to the early years of World War II when Victorian styles enjoyed a huge vogue. The rich yellow gold has a very slight rosy tinge which deepens and softens the color and adds to the authenticity of the Revival style. Hardstone cameos such as this one are highly prized for their durability. Unlike shell cameos, which are soft, these pieces can endure many years of regular wear without the carving losing definition. Greater skill is required in their carving, as well, and the artist who created this cameo was a master. The motif also reflects the interest in Mexican fashions and jewelry during this time period. This ring has been resized in the past, which can be seen in the extreme close-up view of the back of the band. It is very difficult to see this modification without lighted magnification. There are no other signs of wear or use. This is a very important and rare piece of Walter Lampl's fine jewelry. $525.00 (Includes insured shipping to a U.S.A. address)
