REJA
Around 1932 Solomon Finkelstein started a wholesale costume jewelry business called Sol Finkelstein Co. in New York City. In 1939 he decided to expand into the retail market and changed the name of his company to Deja Costume Jewelry, Inc. Unfortunately, Du Jay, Inc. took exception to this name, suing Deja for trademark infringement. The case went all the way to the New York State Supreme Court, where Du Jay prevailed. Deja was changed to Reja, Inc., an easy change for the company to accomplish because the mark on the jewelry could be easily adapted from a D to an R. Deja/Reja was always a small company, known for its high quality merchandise and highly artistic designs, including many charming figurals. Financial difficulties led to a merger with Heller-Deltah Co. in 1953. Both businesses went out of business in 1956.
