JOMAZ/MAZER
In 1923 Joseph and Louis Mazer started their company, called Mazer, in New York and Philadelphia. Louis Mazer was general director and designer. As young children, the brothers had immigrated to the United States from Russia with their parents and siblings. At first the company made only shoe buckles, but in 1927 they branched out to begin producing costume jewelry. Beginning in 1930, Marcel Boucher was a designer for the company. He stayed until 1937, when he left to start his own firm. In 1948 Joseph Mazer began his own company, Joseph J. Mazer & Co., where he was joined by his son, Lincoln. This company became better known as Jomaz as a result of the mark they used on their jewelry and continued in business until 1980. Mazer and Jomaz jewelry is known for its excellent quality, both in materials used and in how the pieces are finished. They made many "real look" jewels.
