
Navajo Second Phase Sterling Concha Belt with Sandcast Classic Period Buckle

Buckle measures 2-1/4 x 3-1/4". Larger conchas measure 1-3/4 x 1-7/8". Butterfly conchas measure 3/4 x 1-1/2". Total length of black leather belt is 37-1/4". This beautiful belt was purchased in 1959 at Tobe Turpen's Trading Post in Gallup, New Mexico by a woman who was working as a nurse on the Navajo Reservation at Fort Defiance, Arizona. The sandcast buckle is of coin silver and dates to circa 1900. There are 9 large rectangular conchas and 10 butterfly concha spacers. The conchas are all handstamped, with beautiful repousse' work. Rich patina of vintage silver has been left intact. This unmarked belt is a beautiful example of vintage Navajo silversmithing. Its classic forms will never go out of style.
