Magnificent Victorian Revival Patriotic Cameo Brooch

Measures 1-1/4 x 1-7/8". This beautiful cameo features the goddesses Diana and Ceres rising above and behind the American eagle. In this context Diana (identifiable by her crescent moon crown) represents the American wilderness while Ceres (with sheafs of grain in her hair) represents agriculture. Both represent the bounty of the United States. This patriotic piece was created during World War II. The high quality art glass simulates natural shell. The glass cameo was apparently molded from an actual carved shell cameo, as tool marks can be seen which make it appear to have been carved. The original carving was outstanding, with fully detailed hair, facial features, and feathers. The dignified goddesses have faces and figures typical of Victorian cameos.
