Mixtec Mesoamerican Wide Mexican Sterling Silver Bracelet
Item #AT127193
Measures about 7-1/4" long and 2-1/8" wide. This unique bracelet dates to the 1940s and features an image from ancient Mixtec culture. The Mixtecs lived in the area now known as Oaxaca, Mexico. This traditional image shows a man of high status (a warrior dressed for battle, priest, or royal). He is wearing a breechcloth, an elaborate headdress, an ankle bracelet that probably included rattles or bells, and huge earrings that loop in a way that depicts "something precious" or "turquoise." The curling tendril coming out of his mouth is the traditional Mixtec symbol indicating that he is speaking. In his right hand he holds a feathered spear or sword. In his left hand is a dismembered head or mask. Our Mesoamerican studies scholar has been unable to tell us any more about what this image might represent. The bracelet is marked STERLING MEXICO in a circle with the letters AA and RRR inside. Slide clasp holds well. Safety chain intact. Extraordinary craftsmanship and excellent weight of nearly 3 ounces. Minimal patina of old silver. (SOLD)
